Gender Based Violence And Its Influence On The Practise Of Corporate Social Media

One of the most prevalent human rights abuses worldwide is gender-based violence. It refers to violence committed against a person because of their gender. Men and women are both impacted by it, but I believe that women and girls are the most sufferers and victims of it.

Social media has the power to alter the behaviours that lead to gender-based violence. The widespread use of social media has significantly affected gender-based violence, both negatively and constructively.

Positive impacts of social media on gender-based violence

Social media is widely used to receive news and share information to many people irrespective of where they live. This enables the public to voice out their issues for help and allows rooms for opinions and views on current affairs affecting the same people. It can also prevent gender-based violence by: -
  • Giving awareness
  • Influence and mobilize people
  • Finding out the root cause of the issue, talking out and educating people about the issue and promoting the action plan to tackle the issue.

Negative impacts of social media on gender-based violence

Social media can be a platform that promotes gender inequality and discrimination leading to gender-based violence by: -
  • Sending out hate comments and violent insults
  • Objectifying women and girl and sexualizing them
  • Stalking
  • Hacking and
  • Catfishing

Gender-based violence takes a huge toll on a person’s physical and psychological well-being. Everyone is eligible for the right to safety and security regardless of their gender, race, shape, sexuality et cetera.

  2. I love this thank you so much for mentioning that not only women experience GVB men actually do go through the same but they choose to be silent about it because they fear being labelled as weak men .

  3. I think gender based violence is still an issue because our government is not taking it seriously. Like providing campaigns that will help against it. But reading from what you wrote here, I can see that there are still people who can help us fight this. Which is very interesting

  6. As someone who has personally suffered fromGBV i really do believe that social media has helped alot of women escape GBV.If you really think about it,how many cases of GBV do you see on your FYP in a week? Most of those cases are usually victims exposing their abusers and seeking for help and freedom from that whole situation. There will always be atleast one person that will help, whether their sharing information on how to contain a protection order for example (which some people may not know about) or help you go and actually report this person or might actually be a police official. So Social media is a very powerful platform when it comes to making awareness on important social issues such as GBV

    1. I agree with you on this. As much as social media may really have its own cons on the issue, it is relatively the best in bringing awareness as well to help towards fighting the cause.
